About 1 1/2 hours in to our walk and after consulting the map several times we ended up deep in to Cairo’s market area with no one speaking any English or French… Decided back tracking was a good idea. After consulting a friendly hotel security staff member we were told to walk “face to face down the street”, got to a major intersection and decided to follow people with suitcases and who looked lost like us. The train station was covered in a huge green tarp and even standing 3 feet from it could not be identified as a train station, it had no signage, no sound of trains and we could not see any tracks any where either… After venturing in we queued for a while Egyptians decided that they were more important to be served than us in a room that may well have been 50 degrees. Getting fed up we pushed our way to the front of the line and were told we were at the wrong window… and to go to ell haven…, Sophie later told me he actually said go to eleven. The train stations numbers only went to 3… sigh… wondered aimlessly till we spotted a small door way in to a new building and headed for it. A security guard made it clear that we were not to go through that door without tickets… so we picked a new door close to that one. Ended up seeing some Prussian numbers resembling 11. (Thank you ECS for my education on Farsi)… Found a ticket office for sleeper train with no one working at it and waited. Now close to 55 degrees when other Egyptians decided it would be a good idea to wait with us… very close, personal space invading with us. 25 minutes later we were taking to the ticket dude, in English!! He phoned to confirm our tickets but no one answered so he told us to wait longer… all the Egyptians in the queue decided to start shouting at him, we escaped a bit and 5 minutes later he smiled at us while he was on the phone… we made our way to the front of the queue and paid for our tickets, we asked for train 84 leaving at 830 pm he gave us 82 leaving at 9:30 PM, he wrote down 21:30 but said 8:30… hmmm. Tickets in hand we made a quick exit and found a cab who negotiated 25 Egyptian pounds (way too much) to take us to the museum. We wanted some A/C ASAP. Museum was good, lots of Egyptian stuff including Tutankhamen’s mask. No A/C!... exhausted and dehydrated we made our way to the Novotel for AC and pizza and internet. Then walked till evening and took a cab from our hostel to the train station… long story but will not get in to it. We left Cairo an hour late 10:30PM on Sleeping train 82. The train was very comfortable, as other travellers had told us. We had time to strike up a conversation with a Canadian couple on the platform who were more than ½ way through their trip and had some great tips for us. Sophie and I had a private two bunk cabin. The food was also better than we expected including not one but two mystery meats and a mystery sauce too! I fought for a few minutes to get the beds out until Sophie pointed out that you needed a special tool to do it. After dinner was cleared away our bunks were lowered and we crawled tired in to our bunks. Can’t say either of us slept too much but would recommend this way of transport to anyone, $60 per person but money well spent. Arrived in Luxor and walked to our Hostel the Boomerang. Wow!! Our room was amazing, they gave us a private room with ensuite super big, patio, clean marble floors A/C and Moslem prayer going on for Ramadan in the background. Had a nap then went to see Luxor, walked for a few hours in 45 degrees, Luxor is spectacular (perhaps our standards were a little low compared to Cairo).

Looked at the Luxor temple then went back to the hostel. Met Lesley and Chris our Canadian friends from the station for dinner and had some real Egyptian food and a great night out for under $10 each. Next morning we awoke at 5:45 to go to the valley of kings with Lesley and Chris. Took a 1 LE ferry across the Nile then a cab to the VoK. Saw the tomb of Ramesses 1, III, and 18th dynasty Pharaoh Thutmose III (pic) tomb numbers 34,16,11

Quite a sight, no pictures allowed, then back to the hostel for some AC and a nap.
YEAH!!! Bonne nouvelle, on a nos billets ($60 us ch).

Arriver a Luxour, YEAH!!!

J'aime beaucoup reading the updates in both english and french -- :) Sounds like you two are having a good time. Stay safe and enjoy!!
